An SL I know well having owned it for the best part of 2 years, dry
stored and really loved and cared for with numerous coats of wax and lots of
preventative maintenance. It has lived a pampered existence in my tenure,
never used in the rain, leather fed countless times, cotton covered and
trickle charged. I have been fortunate enough to own a right few of
these R129 models over the last 25 years and can state with a degree of
confidence that the rarer 24 valve engine 300 is really the pick of the
bunch. The 500 is a great car but has its issues and is costly to service, I
owned a superb SL 60 amg which was a blast, however, very costly to run and
service, and of course to buy in the first place. The 24 Valve car has a spikey
231 bhp and will return sensible fuel consumption on the run.
There never was a car like the R129 in the annals of motoring history,
there probably never will be again. The market has woken up to what
these elusive examples represent, and this is a solid example fresh to the
market. This model is the best example of substitution in the classic world,
meaning that those who are priced out of one generation automatically look
at a newer generation that is more affordable. The R129 s depreciation
finally bottomed out some time ago. I have probably overstressed the message
already, however, this is a great Mercedes. The classic colour scheme can only
enhance the long-term residual of this enduring classic that should now rightly
be wrapped away being brought out on dry days, a superb investment.
Difficult vehicles to value, this is fairly priced for what is a very
strong car that is 100 % tried and tested.

This SL was first registered and pre delivery inspected by an MB dealer in
Cumbria and immediately shipped over to a hotelier on the Isle Of Mann where
it remained for the first 5 years. It then moved across to the Chesterfield
area for the next 6 years, then Bristol and then a short spell in Ireland
before coming to Oban in Scotland where I purchased it from a Traffic Police
officer who was a member of Oban Classic Car Club.
it has accumulated 6 keepers in total and just turned 91000 miles with an
impressive 22 engine services being stamped in the original official booklet.
This is a genuine RHD UK supplied example that is factory original in every
detail, the alloys are correct, the temptation to change or meddle with anything
has bene resisted, which is why I bought it.
Surely amongst the top engineered cars all of all time with Teutonic build
quality. The 3.0 24 valve 231 bhp engine is not to be confused with the more
common and underpowered 190 bhp fitted to the more basic 300, the 24-valve
car is far rarer. It has a silken smooth straight six engine, which is arguably
the most reliable unit they have ever made and not overly complicated. You
can get a decent fuel return too, the V8s are extremely thirsty.

Service History & Care - 22 Engine Service Stamps + 7 Brake Fluid & Coolant
The Mercedes straight six petrol is a legendary bullet proof unit and is so
under worked that it will last forever. Very obviously always been cherished
and garaged the majority of its life, I serviced the car last year and had it
inspected top to toe. I have spent a lot of money having the electrical system
fully appraised with all issues ironed out at a cost of £1600. The roof
stopped working with any consistency earlier this year and they are notoriously
the weak points on these models. Do not buy an SL of this era without clear
evidence that it works correctly as they can be hugely problematic to put right
and costly and time consuming to diagnose. Roofs that are jerky or slow spell
some big bills ahead, a lesson learned the hard way.
Working on the basis that the roof control module was testing properly I set
about having the compressor and the pump refurbished only to find the roof
still to be erratic. I then moved on to cleaning and checking all the
microswitches, of which there in excess of 20. Finally, it was diagnosed as
having a faulty module after over 40 hours of electrician time invested, he
essentially went over the whole car top to bottom. A new module was then
bought and fitted and its work perfectly with smooth speed and silence.
This was a long and costly way round, however, I can now guarantee that the
next owner will not have any issue with the roof system as its been fully
refurbished and made like new. The hardtop also secures properly and is in
excellent condition.
