Curiously, I have never owned a mark 5 which kind of escapes me, having concentrated on the older mk1 and 2 models and being fortunate enough to own a split new MK7 R model for two years as a daily driver I kind of thought I knew all there was to know about the model line up and its evolution and no further education was required. I must have owned in excess of 100 Golfs over the last 25 years, what more was there to find out? In essence what makes a great GTi is not outright power, its the balancing and weighting of all the major controls, and how they harmonize with the amount of power available at your foot. Having driven this car for a week and I am truly taken with it, I had read reviews about it stating that it was possibly the best incarnation of the model and that opinion is rightly founded. Its a complete car, it covers all bases and is truly all the car anyone will ever need. It offers exciting performance in a practical package, yes you will source quicker more powerful hot hatches but none will be as fully rounded or as accessible and exploitable by the driver. The car responds supremely to every input from the driver with an effortless ease, drive it for day and it feels like an old friend. The MK5 is the sweet spot and as years roll on are sure to be recognized as such, they have actually stopped depreciating now and are fast becoming a modern classic. Couple up all the above with a car that will return 32mpg over mixed driving situations, offers supreme reliability, excellent build quality, cheap servicing costs, proper street cred and image, and you will get close to understanding that this is probably the best GTi of all time. I am pretty much in awe of this wee car, when you head out in the morning and have a few different sets of keys to choose from and you make a beeline for it, what does that tell you? Pre delivery inspected and registered by T J Hamilton VW in Cookstown ON 23.05.2008. This is the final year of the MK5 model on a 2008 08 plate. A matching numbers car with all original factory panels and never been involved in any accidents. The car The temptation to meddle or change anything on the car has been wholly resisted. This high degree of originality is not easily found on these cars with owners changing alloys, remapping, changing stereos and suspension, you name it, it gets altered. It has an excellent history file dating right back to new. Two working remote keys, a complete original book pack with drivers handbook and service booklet detailing 12 engine services. The timing belt and water pump were changed at 63000 miles as a precautionary measure. All the panels are original and the paint is in excellent shape also looking to be factory paint with no nasty surprises and no signs of dreaded corrosion around the wings. The interior is as untouched and as un restored as the rest of the car, the seats heat and up are are roasting hot for winter driving days. The engine bay is even detailed and the underside is totally leak free with plastic under tray still in place.
