1988 Lotus Excel 2.2 SE Calypso Red - Gold Decals Restored 1000 Miles Ago Absolutely Stunning Investment Car 58000 Miles The Excel Classic rear wheel drive with Lotus Type 912 engine, Spec 10 with a 2174cc engine capacity 16 Valve DOHC high compression 180 bhp engine as used in the Esprit Series 3. Twin Dellorto DHLA 45D carburettors with a 5-speed manual gearbox in stock format as taken from the Toyota W58 assembly line. Galvanised steel backbone chassis with steel roll cage with the body shell being made of fibreglass. Power assisted steering, ventilated discs all round with integral rear drums. The body is finished in Calypso Red; the wheels are the iconic 15 inch 7J X Ah2 Lotus Speedline alloys (including the spare). The interior is the standard Beige leather with fabric upholstery to seats and door panels. On The Road The results of this high power to weight ratio and clever chassis design are super-fast cross-country ability with a high revving engine, and, possibly one of the best rear wheel driving experience I have ever had, its so precise and balanced that finding the limit of the handling is well beyond most driver’s skill set. An intoxicating drive and a car that attracts a serious amount of attention and road respect, you won’t be disappointed. Registration E664 MCP Chassis no SCC 089 912 JHD1 2620 Engine no DB 912 88 04 24818 Dor April 1988 Condition (92 High Res Images) Immaculate paint work throughout the whole car, a show example. In 2013 (only 1000 road miles ago) the paint was fully restored. The complete car was stripped down with all body panels being removed including boot, bonnet, bumpers, spoilers, lights, light pods and doors. It was then carefully rubbed down, primed and two pack paint applied and buffed to a fine finish. New original Lotus decals were then fitted. Within the paperwork there is a photographic record of the restoration. The Speedline alloys and hub caps were then refurbished to as new. All 5 wheels were chemically cleaned, sand blasted powder coated and lacquer applied. 4 new tyres fitted with new valves and balanced and tracked. A new 25-piece carpet mat set was fitted, the remainder of the interior is wholly original. The engine bay was expertly cleaned and detailed. The engine was then set about. The oil was replaced with Valvoline Racing VR1 20W 50 and new filter. New ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, new spark plugs, cambelt and tensioner replaced. New alternator belt and power steering belt. New air filter, the tappets were all adjusted and the Dellorto carbs were tuned. New brakes fitted to the rear and a new washer bottle and pump. As such this Lotus drives superbly and fires right off the key. Its 100 % HPi clear with a clean underside and never been involved in any bumps or had any welding. Other Maintenance - New coolant fan - Cylinder head removed, all valves removed and reground - Head rebuilt onto block with new gaskets - New radiator - New oil pressure sender unit - Upgraded high performance distributor car and rotor arm - N/S/F caliper reconditioned - Fuel pump removed and rebuilt Summary These cars with decent low mileages are great investments with values climbing month on month. They offer a real performance experience and a touch of exotica that you will never feel in a similar BMW or Mazda. This coupled with relatively low production numbers should ensure this to be a clever investment if properly stored and valeted, for the money nothing else will really touch it.
