" Maturity, power, refinement, class and taste "
The R230 SL is one of those cars that immediately feels right. Nothing
to assimilate, or acclimatise to, simply an immediacy that speaks of
engineers looking pleased with themselves and a hell of a lot of boxes
ticked. Of course its very clever too, so the structure is now pretty
much all aluminum, saving roughly 110kg over the basic bones of the old
SL. It's quite, quite brilliant, with what is a breadth of ability and is precise,
fast and totally complete, and superb to own and appreciate every day.

The Drive
Excellent power and economy makes this a very useable day to day SL.
Can be sensibly run also on fuel returning high 20s as a mere average
and into the 30s with ease on a longer run. There's performance aplenty
in these cars, together with all the gadgetry you could desire and that
fabulous Mercedes-Benz build quality, It's a fact that you never see a
Mercedes-Benz SL being driven anywhere near it's (very high) limits, just
as you never see £50,000 Range Rovers in muddy fields. It's nevertheless
true, however, that the SL was without doubt designed as something to
cruise to the beach and back, however will comfortably tour in total
comfort. The handling is a sensation for such a heavy car and is still a
very modern looking Mercedes. The fully retractable permanent fixed
structure allows the roof to fold back and forth with the touch of a
button, offering all-year round usability and security, and it looks fantastic.

Service History & Recent Maintenance
The service records are indisputable and the little mileage it has covered
is instantly forgiven when viewed in the flesh, the significant monies spent
will give much peace of mind to the new buyer in the safe knowledge
that this is the proper article.

Almost complete full Merdedes dealer history, all but the last stamp which
is a specific Benz specialist, 7 stamps in total with the most recent interval
within the last 1500 miles and the last significant servicing visit to the
Mercedes dealer less than 6000 miles ago. Essentially this SL is over serviced
- which is never a bad thing.
A presentation ring binder accompanies with a chronologically ordered file
of maintenance and previous MoT's. Lots of Mercedes invoices detailing a
lifetime of care and attention. A quick glean through confirms semi-recent
items such as roof seals and glass seals, roller blind, pse pump, roof control
unit, brakes, bushes and much more all replaced by the official Mercedes
dealer network. It would also appear to have recorded an auto' transmission
change by Mercedes dealer at 33,000 miles, that would mean there is only
around 20,000 miles on the current gearbox..which is super silky smooth.

Crucial to these cars is a working roof and no leaks or water ingress in the
boot, I can confirm that the boot is bone dry and the roof works as intended
with no issues. There are invoices for roof seal, glass seals, roof control unit,
exterior trim roof panels etc, all this has been replaced by Mercedes within
the last few years at great expense. The cabin and luggage compartments
are bone dry.

Condition
Its a stunner. Truly excellent
& original condition for age and mileage, including all paintwork trim glass and
lights. Perfect inside with zero defects or wear indicators and crucially it all
works as it should, proper oil pressure, uses no oil or water, smooth change and
kick down, exhaust is silent until prodded and brakes are positive with no pulls
or pulses. The precisely engineered power hood is one of the best; it's
sufficiently well insulated to make the SL a refined all-weather car for Britain's
unpredictable climate. The cabin is a cosseting cocoon with superb seats.
These cars were massively over engineered both mechanically & structurally
and trimmed with superior materials, the Mercedes engines, like the cars, last
virtually forever as they're always under-stressed. No dings or dents and no nasty
scratches, all the panels are true & elegant. There is the odd stone chip which is
nothing other than an honest car that's never been bumped and therefore
never required any remedial paintwork. The alloys are very tidy with a matching
set of good tyres that have plenty life and the car tracks 100 % along the road
with no wobbles or vibrations or steering misalignment.

Summary
Bearing the hallmark of true quality as well as delivering performance and
refinement matched by few of its contemporaries. The wide, low-slung SL is
in its element wafting along sun-washed boulevards - think California or
Cote d'Azur. A true design classic. A Sports convertible that can be used
offering one of the more exciting engines in the range and won't hammer you
at the pump. The SL 350 is a beautifully smooth cruiser with exceptional
levels of refinement that firmly hits the bull’s eye and can be used all year
round.
