" If you have something that is of superior quality, and you
look after it, it will last you forever "

This Mercedes-Benz 190 E is a cherished example of the robust
W201-series compact saloon, coming direct from long term garaged
summer use only ownership, and presented in astonishing
time-warp condition. It is powered by the fantastic M103.940
2.6-liter inline-six engine petrol engine producing around 166bhp,
with rear-wheel drive via a four-speed automatic transmission.

H191 GEV
First registered 01.08.1990 by MB Chelmsford, Essex, it shows
eight keepers though been with the most recent for the last twelve
years. It was an occasional high days & holidays use car and it
was very much doted on, always garaged and has been used in
dry weathers only, Mr W has been obsessive with upkeep, as
the marvellous service records confirm.

The current MOT is valid until August, any advisories on last
MOT have been addressed as detailed below. The most recent service
was last year, currently wants for nothing. All tyres are matching
Continentals, the spare wheel is as new.

It has all the original handbooks intact in the wallet, a full set
of tools, warning triangle, two correct keys, mats, and even
original dealer supplied keyring from all that time ago.
Now covered a very low warranted mileage of 109k which is 100 %
correct.
This 190 is as fresh as a daisy, immaculate engine bay, door
inners, boot, immaculate cabin, clean corrosion free underside,
and drives like a new car mechanically.
There is zero rust or any marks worth comment at all, it’s in
incredible condition. The car required a light detail to reveal
the incredible preservation of these hard-wearing materials.
It is unlikely that anyone will be able to produce another that is
better than this, if they can I would like to see it.

Condition - Show Condition
It’s not a restored car, rather a beautiful original survivor
throughout which retains a wonderful finish. The interior
is in excellent condition as pictured with no wear indicators
at all. This example can be driven right into your garage
and brought back out when it’s time to visit the shows.
The shut lines and panel gaps are impressive, and there are
no signs of corrosion.
All the light and lenses are free of cracks, chips and clouding,
and are original. The door jambs, bonnet and boot shuts are in
excellent condition, as are the window and door rubbers.

All the plastic trim has fared well over the thirty-six years,
well-oiled and supple, the bumpers have next to no marks.
The engine bay is pristine, as is the boot. Starts first time
with a recent battery being fitted. The operation of the gears
and brakes etc are superb, the suspension is like driving on
air, soft and supple and has real grace. The steering so fluid
and precise. Mechanically and bodily as good as it gets, you
will not find better. The interior is just super clean.
A more up to date Bluetooth head unit is fitted though I have the
original and very rare working factory Blaupunkt in its box.

Service History
Mr W purchased in 2014 from MTSV a long-established Mercedes
specialist in Yorkshire (still wearing their plates) and brought
the car North with him when he moved. He sought out the best one
he could find at the time paying a fair sum of £7000 which was top
money for that juncture. The condition does merit it however, with
an original service booklet detailing 24 individual engine services,
all factory supplied tools and handbooks and keys. An A4 binder is
neatly compiled in date order totalling over £7500 in bills.
Most recently some preventative works were carried out to
correct the last test advisories, namely welding to an exhaust
area, new brake flexi, a new suspension bush, and the coil springs
rubbed back and repainted, a very proactive owner.

In 2015 a minor mechanical overhaul was completed by Simon Light
MB specialist in Herts. A new head gasket, a new radiator, the
gearbox serviced & re sealed, and new shocks amongst other works
on the invoice. This was not only 10k ago.

The W201
From January 1974 to January 1982, Mercedes spent over
£600 million researching and developing the 190 and
subsequently said it was 'massively over-engineered'.
It marked a new venture for them, finally giving it a
new smaller model to compete with the likes of the Audi
80, BMW 3 Series and Saab 900.
These cars were made during the best years of MB and are
vastly superior to the inferior build quality C Class that
replaced it. They were truly over-developed which is why
they commanded such high prices when new. Mercedes continue
to trade of this reputation despite it peaking in this era,
simply put, there is nothing like it. In fact, it’s a miracle
that Mercedes actually managed to manufacture it at all
retaining a margin of profit such are the high levels of
engineering materials and detail present in putting it
all together. Certainly, could not be done today, mainly
as these materials and processes are no longer employed
in the mass production car business, and it would be a
non-profit exercise!

Summary
Investing your money in this car is a safe prospect.
The build quality and craftsmanship on these eras of
Mercs will never be seen again. Values of good original
W201 models are rising year on year. This example is a
real gem and is easily the nicest one I have come across
for a long time. This car goes to show how effortless
they can look when well cared for.
It is without question one of the very best available.
A great opportunity for the seasoned Benz collector.
